Midnite was a highly influential roots reggae band from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, known for its deep, meditative sound and conscious lyrics. Formed in 1989 by brothers Vaughn and Ron Benjamin, the band became a major force in modern reggae, gaining a devoted global following. Vaughn Benjamin, the lead vocalist and songwriter, was recognized for his mystical, poetic lyrics, often infused with Rastafarian spirituality, African history, and social commentary. His distinct vocal style, characterized by a hypnotic, chant-like delivery, set Midnite apart in the reggae scene.
The band's music was heavily bass-driven, with stripped-down instrumentals that allowed Vaughn’s profound messages to take center stage. Their debut album, Unpolished (1997), became a landmark in the roots reggae revival, earning praise for its raw, authentic production and deep lyrical content. Midnite maintained a prolific output, releasing dozens of albums independently and through collaborations with various producers and labels. Albums like Seek Knowledge Before Vengeance, Jubilees of Zion, and Ainshant Maps showcased their uncompromising dedication to conscious reggae.
Despite remaining largely independent and outside the mainstream, Midnite gained international acclaim, touring extensively and building a dedicated grassroots following. In 2015, Vaughn Benjamin rebranded his musical journey under the name Akae Beka, continuing to create music with the same spiritual and philosophical depth. Sadly, Vaughn Benjamin passed away in November 2019, but his legacy lives on through Midnite’s extensive discography and the profound influence they had on conscious reggae music worldwide.
